Mushroom Stuffed Cheeseburgers

I am a bad mommy. My oldest son is 7 and doesn't know how to tie his shoes. It isn't for a lack of trying, I have tried many, many times. I blame my husband mostly and his genetics. According to my mother-in-law he was the last kid in his class to tie his shoes. I also blame how kids are taught in school these days. Apparently learning simple skills like tying your shoes is no longer something that public schools teach. Okay. In 1st grade we spent a great deal of time learning to tie our shoes until every kid could do it by the end of the year. The school district that my son is in does not see this as an important skill. They even went so far as to state in a take home note that if my child does not know how to tie his own shoes that the teachers don't have the time to take to tie his shoes for him. I completely understand that teachers are over worked, both of my in-laws were teachers for almost 40 years each. I just wish that some of the skills that used to be emphasized at school such as tying your shoes and cursive would still be viewed as valuable. So I continue to fail miserably at home. I know that a big part of it is that he is left handed. It took working with him for almost a year for him to understand how to hold a pencil and begin to write. I never knew how much harder being left handed makes everything. Hopefully I am not the only bad mommy in the world and that my son turns out to be a normally functioning adult. If not there are always slip on shoes that require no tying what-so-ever. Today's recipe is something that my whole family loves, cheeseburgers. This week I tried a new recipe for Mushroom Stuffed Cheeseburgers from the June/July issue of Taste of Home magazine.

This recipe has 10 ingredients. It takes 40 minutes of total time, all of which is active and makes 8 servings. I did make a number of changes to the original recipe. First I make my buns from scratch. It saves money and they taste so much better than store bought. Secondly, I thought that I had steak sauce in the fridge, I was wrong. When I got ready to make the recipe I discovered my fault and decided rather than running to the store in the middle of dinner to leave out the steak sauce all together. My husband is still refusing to clean the rust off of our outdoor grill so I used my indoor electric grill to grill the burgers. The cheeseburgers had a problem with slitting open during grilling. Don't feel bad if this also happens to you, they still tasted fine after they were finished cooking.

These burgers turned into a mess on the grill. The amount of filling was just too much for the burgers to stay together. The burgers still tasted delicious, they just oozed out their insides a lot on the grill. If you would rather that your burgers stayed intact I would suggest adding only a small amount of the filling to each burger and make sure to form the patties very flat with a good inch or more of space between the filling and the burger edge. The problem was only aesthetic though so if you aren't worried about the way the burger looks, the recipe was fine.

  1. I have two boys....One grown and one still at home. What struck me about your post was not tying their shoes but, learning to write cursive. My youngest son looks absolutely pained when he has to sign his name to a document-His response to me over the years, is that penmanship is not a concern because they don't write, they keyboard. The reality is that handwriting is becoming obsolete, a thing of the past (sigh).

Your mushroom burgers, oozing is delightful. Totally impressed that you make your own buns.

    1. My oldest tries the same argument :) It does seem that handwriting is becoming obsolete, which is too bad. My mother always had the nicest penmanship!

  2. I don't think it makes you a bad mommy. If I could make a suggestion, though, maybe focus on the shoes instead of the cursive. I think it's a good idea to learn cursive but it's not as important for most people. Unless his school requires it, I might back off and concentrate on the shoes for awhile. I do think that's a very important skill. My two cents, for whatever they're worth. :) The burgers look great, we love mushroom-swiss burgers so these would be great for us too.

    1. Don't worry I am focusing on the shoes tying :) My mother-in-law was a business teacher so she is the one concerned with cursive. She is a great teacher and doesn't expect him to be writing it anytime soon, it's just on her to do list. My husband is adamant that he knows how to sign his name since he worked at perfecting his signature :)

  3. I had to take a day for my juniors in high school to practice cursive to sign their name for an upcoming standardized test. There are so many life skills our government has decided is unimportant to teach today so we can teach to a test. Drives me crazy!

    1. My mother in law taught business and had to do something similar. It's a shame when they can't even sign a legal document! It drives my husband crazy too, he is determined that he has a great signature thanks to learning cursive :)

  4. My youngest will be 6 in December and he has no idea how to tie his shoes. He doesn't even have a pair that requires tying right now. I suppose his next pair should be lace-ups.

    1. As long as he is fine in non-tie shoes I wouldn't worry too much :) I think it takes some kids longer than others. My son is ahead in reading and math, his fine motor skills have always taken a little longer. My husband was the same way :)

  5. Here, they teach them in school, so I never had to worry about teaching them to tie their shoes.

  6. They burger looks great.
They don't teach kids that here either (Michigan). My Kindergartner came home at the beginning of last year and told me the recess guy told him he had to get shoes that don't tie because no one had time to tie them. -_-

Then he came home and said the lunch lady told him not to bring the juiceboxes if he couldn't put his own straw in (which I didn't know he couldn't do, and he easily learned...in one try). :/

I realize there's not time to do every little thing for each child, but the overall sense of 'it's not my job' miffs me a little if it's coming from my son's elementary school. They're 5, not 15.

    Rant complete. :)

    1. That's ridiculous about the juice box. I would have been mad! It would have taken less time just to teach the lesson. I worry about the direction society is moving sometimes.....

  8. You're totally not a bad mommy for that. Every kid is different and I'm sure it'll just click for him one day as if he's known how to do it all along. You do so much for your family, you're totally not a bad mommy for that. Now, as for the jerks at his school, I mean really... what is going on these days when the people who are supposed to be there to educate our children can't seem to find the time to turn something as teachable as tying a shoe into some sort of teachable moment? *sigh*

    1. I'm sure that it will kick in too. He is very smart and ahead in school. It has always just taken him a little longer with fine motor skills. I blame all the standardized tests that they take now. If they want government funding they have to test high so they spend a lot of time teaching to state standards. Studies have shown though that kids aren't any smarter than before the changes, so it would be nice if they put a little more emphasis on basic skills again :)

  9. My daughter was one of the first kids to learn how to tie her shoes, yet she's going into third grade and out of all of her sneakers, she picks the ones that look like laces but are secretly velcro because she just cannot take the time (like 10 extra seconds) to tie her shoes.

This recipe looks great and I just so happen to be craving burgers. Even more so now! Can't wait to make them. Pinning it.

    1. My son loves that kid of shoe too :) They look like regular sneakers which he likes and he doesn't have to do any actual tying!

This for the pin, I really do appreciate it!

  10. You are so not a bad parent and not the only parent with a kid who can't tie his/her shoes. My son is 8, granted he's autistic but he doesn't know how to do it either. I think he just doesn't care to learn either. Those burgers look delicious and I love your photos.

    1. Part of the problem with my son is probably lack of motivation too :) If he doesn't want to do something he takes forever to learn how!

Thanks for the sweet comments :)

  11. Aww you're not a bad mommy! I think for some kids it just takes them longer to learn things than others. It's too bad they aren't teaching things like this in school anymore. I hope he gets the hang of it soon! Love your country photos!

    1. It does take some kids longer than others. It's interesting watching my two boys since they do different things earlier and later than each other :)

  12. I saw your comment on my blog and couldn't read it once I saw you had a post about mushroom stuffed burgers (I'm a little ADD and get sidetracked easily lol)... OMG yum! They look wonderful and will definitely be added to next week's dinner round. They look fantastic!
As far as your son; my now 18 year old couldn't tie his shoes until junior high. He is also a lefty, but I have to take most of the responsibility because he was so frustrated we basicly just bought him slip ons forever...Now he jokes about it saying at least he figured it out before college. lol
