Living with Gluten Issues

Sorry for the lack of recipe posts in the last week. My gluten issues struck me hard last weekend and I was very sick for the last three days. As you know from reading my recipe modifications I don't eat gluten. What I don't really talk about is what that means for my life in general.

This weekend I ate out with my family. I was tired and didn't look up the gluten free menu ahead of time. It is always hit or miss with eating at restaurants to begin with. Someone might use the same knife on a wheat sandwich and then cut my salad. While this might not effect me 8 out of 10 times, the other 2 times I will get a very bad reaction. Last weekend was one of those times. We got home, I went to bed and woke up very sick. For the next three days my intestines were in agony. I get sweats, cramps and what basically feels like the worst case of food poisoning you've ever had. That was what happened to me the last three days.

After the reaction has run it's course I am fine. I have had it happen to me many times over the years before I was formally diagnosed. My mother used to think that I just had a sensitive stomach. Luckily last year I was finally able to figure out what has been a life long struggle and was formally diagnosed. I was also luckily that I knew that celiac disease ran in my family and that gluten issues could be a genetic issue for me. Going into the doctor I knew what blood tests, symptoms etc I needed to discuss. A lot of people go a lot longer without being diagnosed formally.

So I'm sorry that I have been a little MIA. Life is back to normal and I should have regular recipe posts starting tomorrow. I hope everyone is having a great week!

    1. No, I grew out of my diary intolerance. I had one when I was growing up. Thanks to genetics I can't have gluten. It can cause very serious problems with my intestines (holes etc) so I have to be careful to avoid eating it. Normally I do well with avoiding it, but this weekend I wasn't so lucky :) It's hard since it is literally in everything even things like twizzlers, french fries, plus there can be cross contamination from knives etc.

    1. I am much better now. I used to have it happen a lot when I ate gluten, I just have been lucky in the last year since I have been very vigilant about avoiding it. This weekend I wasn't as vigilant and I paid for it :)

    1. Thanks! I am feeling much better now. I used to have these bouts a lot more frequently before I was diagnosed and stopped eating gluten. I just made the mistake of being a little lazy when eating out :)

  6. Glad you're feeling better. I don't have gluten issues myself, but a close friend of mine does and she gets super sick whenever she goes "off-diet".

    1. She sounds a lot like me :) It can be hard when other people haven't experienced it or know someone that has. It really can be debilitating when it flairs up!

  7. I didn't realize that even a knife that had cut into something with Gluten could cause an adverse reaction. I bet restaurant workers (in general) do not know either. :(

    I'm glad you're feeling better.

    1. Most of the time you have to tell the restaurant that you need a special menu, part of the grill etc. It's normally not a big deal, but everyone once in a while I have a bad reaction. This was one of those times. It was my fault, I know not to chance it, but I was tired and cranky that day :)

  8. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I hope you're feeling well now. Sometimes I wonder if I might have a gluten issue myself; it wouldn't surprise me, given other health issues I have and the symptoms do seem like they fit me, to a degree.

    1. Gluten problems are definitely under diagnosed. I wouldn't be surprised at all if you had one. Especially if you have other problems such as migraines, stomach issues, digestive problems or inflammation. For years I was tested for every autoimmune issue except celiacs. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong until I insisted that it could be a gluten problem :) It might be something you want to talk to your doctor about, you can get a blood test.

  9. I've also been kinda MIA lately. I've had my scheduled posts and because of a busy work week haven't had time to really read my favorite blogs, yours being one of them. So sorry that you were sick and I'm happy to know that you're back to normal. It's good also when you know exactly what could be wrong and your family history. Sometimes these doctors don't know squat.

    1. I've gotten used to it in the last year. There are still times I want a donut etc, but it isn't too bad :) Have a great weekend also!

  11. I'm sorry to hear you weren't feeling well. I definitely know how that goes having a case of Crohns myself-which often coincides with celiac disease. I'm very thankful that I've been able to alleviate most of my symptoms with the proper diet-as have you. So glad you were able to at least get a diagnosis, its crazy how many people continue to suffer w/o understanding the cause. hope you feel better.
