Home-Ec 101 by Heather Solos

Home-Ec 101 is a new helpful hints book by author Heather Solos. It shares tips and tricks for tackling the everyday challenges relating to the home. I was given an excerpt, Chapter 20, to review for the One2One Network.

First thing I should say is that my mother taught me from a very early age how to do basically everything around the house. I was cooking family meals by the time I was 12, and able to sew my own outfits at about the same age. Currently, I'm a stay at home mom and I take the job of taking care of my home very seriously. Due to all these factors, I don't think that I am the target audience for this book. I was given a household hints book similar to this when I graduated high-school and truth be told, I was a little offended.

I will say that the book is well written and organized. The author uses humor to draw in the reader and make them comfortable. However, my main objection to the book is a generational one. Younger generations are incredibly tech savvy and spend most of their time on some sort of media device. All the info in this book would be available on-line and most of the kids that people would be buying this book for would never use it. I think it would be much better as an app for the iphone than an actual book. I just don't think it's relevant.

I was given an excerpt of this book by the One2One Network for review, I received no additional compensation.

  1. wow! I had the opposite opinion as you. I feel this book is right on and important. By that, I mean, that those reading might find themselves wanting to get out of the tech age and back to basics. I'm going to buy the book to use with my daughter in teaching home-ec...but then again I've already been using Home Ec textbooks from the 60's to teach her!

  2. I think I might just not be the right personality for the book. I think it's great your teaching your daughter with Home Ec textbooks and that you guys are able to bond that way. I have always been a hands on personality, I am better at learning by someone teaching me rather than reading how to do the activity. Plus, I read very little non-fiction, I am more of a novel person and love having things instantly at my disposal if I'm doing something else, hence the app idea. Thanks for the response!!
